Return car guide

Return cars – how it works in Norway

A return car is a car that already needs to travel from A to B. Hjemferd connects car providers needing transport with drivers who are flexible on timing and route. This guide explains how return cars work, what may be included and how to find an available car.

The basics

What is a return car?

A return car is a vehicle that needs to be moved from one place to another. It may be a rental car returned in a different city, a company car that needs to go back to the correct branch, or a car that a private individual or company needs help transporting.

Instead of sending an employee or buying traditional vehicle transport, the car provider can publish the trip on Hjemferd. A driver already planning to travel the same way can send a booking request. A necessary transport task can then become an affordable journey for the driver and simpler logistics for the provider.

Hjemferd is Norway’s largest platform for return cars. We work with car providers including Sixt, Enterprise, Rent-A-Wreck, imove, Face2face and Hyre. Together we make it easier to find return cars from rental companies and other businesses that need to move vehicles between branches and locations in Norway.

Step by step

How Hjemferd works

1

The car provider publishes the trip

The listing shows pickup location, delivery location, time window, vehicle type and which costs are included.

2

You find a route that suits you

Browse available cars and filter by departure location. Choose a car that fits your travel plans.

3

You send a request

Enter your preferred pickup time. The car provider must approve or reject the booking request.

4

Agree the details and drive the car

Once the booking is approved, both parties receive the contact information needed to complete the trip.

Price and terms

What does a return car cost?

Hjemferd is free for drivers. The terms of each trip are set by the car provider, so it is important to read the listing before sending a booking request.

Fuel / charging

The listing shows whether fuel or charging is covered, or whether only what is already in the tank or battery is included.

Road tolls

Whether road tolls are covered varies from trip to trip and is clearly shown in the listing.

Other costs

Any other costs or benefits are shown with the car before you book.

Safety on the trip

Insurance, excess and rental agreement for return cars

Car providers such as rental companies and other professional operators normally have insurance arrangements for their vehicles. Insurance does not necessarily mean that damage is free of cost to the driver: an excess may apply, and both coverage and excess vary between providers and agreements. Confirm what applies to your return car before pickup.

A rental or transport agreement is often entered into directly between the car provider and the driver, especially when the provider is a company or rental business. Read the agreement before signing and check the terms for pickup, delivery, mileage, insurance and liability for damage. Hjemferd facilitates contact between the parties; the vehicle terms are agreed with the car provider.

For drivers

What should you check before booking?

  • That the pickup and delivery locations fit your journey.
  • That you can pick up the car within the stated time window.
  • Which driving licence class and vehicle type the trip requires.
  • What is included for fuel/charging, road tolls and other costs.
  • Insurance, any excess and the terms of the rental or transport agreement.
  • Additional information from the car provider.
